1. Too much volume, too soon

2. Not enough volume on high-potential muscles

3. Counting warmup sets as productive volume

Is optimal volume the same for men and women?
At equivalent training level, volume recommendations are the same. Women have equivalent or slightly superior inter-session recovery capacity (Hunter 2014), which often allows them to tolerate higher frequency at equal volume.
Should volume vary week to week?
Ideally yes. Block periodization (rising volume over 4–6 weeks, followed by a deload week at 50% volume) produces better long-term gains than constant volume. But this is secondary to respecting the overall ranges — consistency trumps fine optimization.
